OBJECTIVES

This project focused on packaging design and standard operating procedures to minimize overseas shipping damage to furniture. Shipping damage was costing the company over $1.5 million dollars annually. Damage was occurring primarily during transit to international destinations. The project included research, design, and delivering documentation and processes to create a comprehensive set of guidelines for packaging furniture.

KEY ANALYSES

  • Research

    • Conducted extensive research on industry standards and best practices for furniture packaging and shipping. Analyzed competitor packaging and evaluated other manufacturers’ techniques.

  • Assessment of Current Packaging

    • Assessed current packaging methods, identifying recurring types of damage and root causes.

    • Evaluated packaging materials, design techniques, and customer feedback to pinpoint areas for improvement. Consulted with logistics experts to understand current challenges in transit.

  • Design

    • Worked with a team of packaging designers to create more resilient solutions.

    • Recommended a two-phase approach: first, adjust placement of existing materials (foam, corrugated, plastic) and then test sustainable options like honeycomb corrugated.

  • Documentation and Guidelines

    • Developed a detailed packaging guidelines document covering materials, design, and procedures. Created visual aids and instructions tailored to various furniture types and fragility levels.

    • Collaborated with cross-functional teams to ensure all perspectives were integrated.
